Five Shingle Design Factors to Consider

When installing a new roof, one of the first decision you need to make is the type of shingles. There are no one size fits all shingle options. Instead, you need to consider the various design factors so you can choose the best and most attractive roofing shingle for your home.

1. Color

There is more to color than cosmetic appearance. True, you want a color you enjoy and one which complements your home and that of your neighborhood. You also need to think about the effects of color on your home's energy cost and comfort level. A dark colored roof, for example, absorbs heat. This can lead to a hot home and high cooling costs in warm climates, so a lighter colored roof may be preferable.

2. Material

Shingles come in a range of materials. Asphalt shingles are one of the most popular options due to their availability and cost effectiveness. You can also find wood shake shingles for a more traditional look. Tile and clay shingles are also durable and attractive options. Finally, don't overlook the newer metal shingles. These feature the durability and low maintenance benefits of metal roofing but with an attractive look that mimics traditional shingles.

3. Shape

You don't have to stick with the boring rectangular look of traditional three tab asphalt shingles. No matter the material, there is a range of shape options. You can find asphalt and metal shingles, along with some tile and clay offerings, in designs ranging from scalloped edges to geometric patterns like octagons or triangular points. Tile shingles may also come in three dimensional shapes, such as the traditional arched design of Spanish tiles.

4. Finish

Some shingles come with a choice of finish. Metal and tile shingles, for example, can have a matte or gloss finish depending on the look you prefer. You can even get metal shingles with a metallic patina finish that is meant to emulate the look of copper. Architectural shingles are an option for asphalt shingles. Architectural shingles feature a finish of various types of gravel and quartz minerals, which gives them a textured three dimensional look.

5. Treatments

Certain treatments can also benefit the shingles you choose. Anti-moss growth treatments that consist of zinc coatings are common, particularly on asphalt shingles and wood shakes. UV and corrosion treatments can improve the longevity of metal shingles, while tile shingles are often treated with a sealer to prevent weathering damages.
